Insole Size guide
Insoles are scientifically proven to prevent injury by providing necessary support and cushioning for your feet. But choosing improperly-sized insoles can negate any benefits of having them in your shoes to begin with.
Imagine that, you put all the preparation and work to keep your feet healthy for your morning jog, but it could all be for naught if your insoles do not fit as they were designed to.
Picking insoles that are the right size for your shoes is critical if you want to reap their injury–prevention benefits. Don’t sweat it though, we’ll show you how insoles are commonly sized and how to pick the right size for you.
How are insoles sized?
Insoles are usually sized similarly to shoes, but they aren’t always exactly the same. These subtle differences are important to note before diving in and purchasing a pair.
Full length insoles
Manufacturers create full-length insoles to fit a shoe size range as most full-length insoles are designed to be trimmed before use. Bear in mind that full length insoles are designed to fit into shoes that have a removable insole, otherwise they will take up too much space in your shoes.
When buying full-length insoles, purchase a size where you are comfortably in the range and then trim off the excess material that you do not need/does not fit in your shoe. If you are half a size up from a range (say the range is 8-10 and you are 10.5) by the next range up and trim the excess material.
¾ length insoles
For 3/4-length insoles (and other insert pieces) the size range on the product usually matches the footwear sizes in which the insoles/inserts can be comfortably used. This is because most ¾ length insoles and inserts are not designed to be trimmed. ¾ length insoles are designed to fit inside shoes with an existing liner (unlike full length insoles which replace the liner in a shoe).
How should insoles fit?
The primary purpose of insoles and orthotics is to improve stability and comfort for your feet. As a result, your insoles should fit snugly in your shoes, not taking up so much space that they cause discomfort, pressure, or pain.
Your insoles should sit securely in your shoes as well so they do not slip or move around too much, otherwise you run the risk of injury if your feet are in an unstable position.
Remember, full-length insoles are designed to replace the existing insole in your shoe rather than be placed on top of it. ¾ length insoles and inserts can be placed in any shoe though, as long as they fit comfortably and are secure.
