Best Insoles for Supination

View as

Supination/underpronation is common for those with high arches. Unlike overpronation, if you experience supination, then the foot will roll outward as you walk, leading to extra stress on the foot and putting you in danger of other conditions. Learn more about underpronation/supination.

What Causes Supination?

Each time your foot strikes the ground as you walk, a series of coordinated movements absorb shock to keep you moving forward and keep your body in balance. One of these movements is pronation. If you have high arches, then your foot could have a tendency to roll outward as you walk, causing supination.

Treatment for Supination

Proper footwear is one of the best treatments for supination.

Wearing supportive shoes or adding insoles/orthotics to your shoes can provide much-needed stability for your feet. Look for insoles that provide quality arch support but are not hard and rigid. Supination insoles usually have a little bit of flexibility to them. They are designed to help absorb shock and guide the foot into the natural motion of pronation.

How Insoles Help With Supination

Insoles can help restore proper mechanics to your foot and alleviate supination in the following ways:

  • High arch support helps distribute weight evenly across the foot, reducing the tendency of the foot to roll outward (supinate) and providing needed contact in the midfoot area that's often elevated in supinators.
  • Extra cushioning along the outer edge of the insole helps absorb the increased impact forces that occur when the foot rolls outward.
  • Deep heel cups help stabilize the rear foot and guide it into a more neutral position, preventing the heel from tilting outward and reducing the chain reaction of outward rolling that occurs through the rest of the foot.
  • Outer wedge support helps create a more level platform for the foot, compensating for the natural outward tilt that occurs with supination and encouraging more balanced weight distribution across the entire foot.
  • Extra cushioning in the forefoot area helps protect the outer toes and metatarsals that typically bear excessive pressure in supinators, reducing the risk of stress fractures and other complications that can develop from persistent outward rolling.
