When the second metatarsal (the longer bone in the second toe) is longer than the first metatarsal, it is a syndrome called Morton’s Toe or Morton’s Syndrome. Usually, when this condition is present, the second toe is longer than the big toe. Learn more about Morton’s Toe.
What Causes Morton’s Toe?
Morton’s toe is a fairly common condition, and many people who have it never develop discomfort or pain. The cause is quite simple: genetics. About 20% of the population is born with this condition.
Treatment for Morton’s Toe
There’s no treatment required to correct Morton’s Toe unless the condition is causing issues with balance in the foot. If that’s the case, there are two things you can do:
-
Wear properly fitting shoes: This will ensure your feet are comfortable and not bumping up against the end of your shoes.
-
Wear insoles with a metatarsal pad: This helps ensure your foot has proper alignment and support, which can help reduce stress on the feet, ankles, legs, and back.
How Insoles Help With Morton’s Toe
Again, Morton’s Toe may never result in any issues with your feet however, there are a few ways insoles can help avoid biomechanical issues and add balance to your shoes:
- Insoles help distribute evenly through your shoes and away from your second toe.
- Insoles with proper arch support can maintain better foot alignment in your shoes.
- Insoles with a deep heel cup stabilize the rear foot, which in turn helps maintain proper alignment when walking.
- Cushioning and shock absorption can reduce pain and pressure points in your shoes.
